Little Acorns
In April 1992 after Jane Lavis decided to close her South Farm Nursery, Amal Wilson and Margaret Bewley applied to South Tyneside M.B.C. for a licence to open a Pre-school Group in St. George's Church Centre, Front Street, East Boldon and called it "Little Acorns".
With the help of Gay Canbrook of South Tyneside M.B.C. they opened their doors in September 1992 to children who were aged between 2½ - 4 yrs. which means that they celebrated their tenth anniversary in the child care business in September 2002.
During this ten years they cared for over 500 children, mainly from The Boldons and Cleadon but have had a number of children from Sunderland and as far away as Newcastle and Houghton-le-Spring.
It has been a gratifying time for both Amal and Margaret who have been helped over the years by Mrs. Agnes Smith, Mrs. Mary Tiernay, Mrs. Pauline Freeman and the present staff, Mrs Sheila Hendry, Mrs. Mary Story, Mrs. Elizabeth Kennedy and Miss Debra McBride.
No doubt they have all watched their "little acorns" grow into "great oaks".
